Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988), "Subway Rider," circa 1977-1978, charcoal on buff paper, signed lower right, titled upper right, sight: 13.75"h x 16.5"w, overall (with frame): 24"h x 27"w. Provenance: Originally from Mary Beth-O'Hara Dawson's private collection, ex-wife of Shannon Dawson, Basquiat's band member in "Gray" and childhood friend (to whom it was originally gifted). This work has been authenticated by Al Diaz, co-founder, along with Jean-Michel Basquiat, of the street art duo SAMO and lifelong friend of the artist. To quote Al Diaz, "This is early Basquiat. Pre-fame, pre-Warhol, pre-dread locks, pre-crown, pre-skulls, pre-painted up Armani suits, pre-etc�" Current property of a New York City hedge fund manager. Lot includes: notarized letter of provenance from Mary-Beth O'Hara Dawson, notarized letter of authenticity by Al Diaz, photo of Al Diaz holding Subway Rider as well as holding the notarized letter, materials on numerous other works sold by Mary Beth O'Hara Dawson, such as "Space Pork," during prior years at major galleries and auction houses.
