Description
Committee of Vigilance of San Francisco membership certificate of William C. Richmond, the stone lithograph by Britton & Rey, S.F., designed and drawn on stone by Charles Nahl, inscribed "In the name of the people this is to certify that William C. Richmond no. 1903 is a Member of the Committee of Vigilance of the City of San Francisco and is a Member of the 20th Company of Infantry in the Military Organization thereof," signed by President Wm. T. Coleman, Secretary Isaac Bluxome, Jr., Deputy Treasurer William Meyers, and the notorious ''33'' Grand Marshall Charles Doane, central printed escutcheon with lithographed surround of patriotic, industrial, and militaristic reserves, and bears a Committee of Vigilance seal, overall: 22"h x 18"w. NOTE: The San Francisco Vigilance Movement consisted of two popular ad hoc organizations formed during the Gold Rush period in 1851 and 1856. Their stated purpose was to reign in crime and government corruption. They were among the most notorious and, especially the 1856 Committee, the most successful organizations in the vigilante tradition of the American West.
