Description
Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988), "Head 11," 1979-1981, oil stick on paper, unsigned, sheet: 8.5"h x 11"w. Provenance: Property from the Neptune private collection, secured from the residence of Lonnie Lichtenberg between 1979-1981, originally obtained directly from the artist. Exhibition: "The Neptune Collection" at X Contemporary satellite fair, Art Basel, Miami Beach, FL, November 30 - December 3, 2016, curated by Albert Diaz (Co-Founder of SAMO). Exhibition Catalogue: "Jean-Michel Basquiat, Neptune Paper and Panels: Early Works," 2017, Head 11, page 14. Note: Basquiat's unbridled genius shines in this piece. Created before his unprecedented critical and commercial success, it details the development of his works depicting heads with inspiration drawn from his close circle of friends. Thoughts quickly formed within him and made their way onto whatever available medium was present, with bold and decisive steps, never unintentional. This drawing is indicative of his early style, highly sought after by collectors seeking works uninfluenced by the artist's fame and commercialization.
