Description
Studio of Francisco Goya (Spanish, 1746-1828), "Portrait of Francisco Antonio de Leon Y Roldan," circa 1788, oil on canvas, unsigned, canvas: 72"h x 39"w, overall (with frame): 79.5"h x 47.5"w. Provenance: Private Collection (as Francisco Goya) of Meersman Family (Barcelona, ES); then to Ehrich Galleries (New York, NY) as Francisco Goya; then purchased from Parke-Bernet (New York, NY) in 1955 (lot 45 as Francisco Goya) to the Estate of David Pleydell-Bouverie, grandson of the 5th Earl of Radnor (Glen Ellen, CA). Exhibited: "Spain Speaks," Birmingham Museum (Birmingham, AL) as Francisco Goya, 1951-1952. Literature: "Spain in Alabama," by Helen Boswell in 'Art Digest,' Dec. 15, 1951, Vol. 26, pgs. 14 and 29. Note: This painting was authenticated by Dr. Valerian von Loga in 1912, then curator of the Berlin Museum and author of multiple monographs on Francisco Goya. A copy of the original auction catalog with a note on von Loga's original authentication will accompany this lot. All proceeds to benefit the Bouverie Preserve of Audubon Canyon Ranch (Glen Ellen, CA).
