Description
A Rare Folk Art hand carved "Golden Sea Horse" bicycle circa 1890, the gilt painted wood bike carved as a four legged animal, its bovine head carved with expressive eyes and a curling tongue, the front and back legs supporting the twin carved wood wheels, inset with "feather" spokes, an u-shaped upright handle bar carved with serpent heads, mounted with a metal chain and metal pedals, finished with carved wood fish feet, now stationary on a later custom stand. overall bike 36"h x 48"l. Provenance: By repute, this example was destined for the Playland at the historic Sutro's Baths, San Francisco, and is thought to be one of ten produced. A similiar bike is on display at the Heritage Museum, Sandwich, MA.
