Description
From Pre-Columbian Mexico's mysterious mother-culture Olmec Civilization, which burst into incredible art fluorescence without apparent antecedents 2000 B.C. - 500 B.C., we see an audacious sculpture and persona, perhaps beseeching or questioning the gods. Called Olmec Babies, they seem to meld a baby's wonder with and older man's existential questioning. They meld the pudginess of the elderly with the infant, creating a three-dimensional sculptural tour-de-force best appreciated in the round. But the gesture speaks loudest. Old B&W photo prints available to the buyer that show the as-found, pre-repair piece, with the extended arm and some skull-back off as well as nine small-to-tiny pieces, now glued back with cracks showing faintly at his right shoulder, an ankle, and left temple and back of skull, 9"h. Provenance: Collection of Vanna and N. Lee Lacy (Palm Springs, California). Mr. Lacy was a prominent Hollywood producer of films, creative golden-era TV series, and iconic commercials. His collecting has spanned six decades.
