Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919), "Sketch for 'Maternite'," 1885, pencil on paper, initialled center right, museum exhibition label (Fine Art Museum of San Francisco) affixed verso, sight: 13.5"h x 9.75"w, overall (with frame): 20"h x 15.25"w. Provenance: Private collection (by descent); Mrs. Luther Greene (Ellen Chamberlain), New York. Exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art (now DeYoung), "Portraits and People," 1955. Loaned to the Achenbach Foundation for exhibition at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1993.
