Description
An Anthany Dawson (Kwakwaka'wakw, British Columbia, 1969-1999) Pacific Northwest wolf mask, circa 1994, carved of wood and painted, inlaid with silver and abalone shell, 9.75"h x 7"w x 17.75"d. Provenance: the Estate of Charles and Lucy Martell; Publications: the mask is pictured in a special insert of the Victoria Times Colonist, August 29, 1994, commemorating the XV Commonwealth Games. The wearer, Anthany Dawson, is greeted by Prince Edward (son of Queen Elizabeth II) during a totem pole dedication ceremony at Songhees Point that took place on August 17, 1994. Anthany (sometimes Anthony) Dawson learned carving from his mother Nancy. In addition to exhibiting together, they were on the team that helped carve the XV Commonwealth Games totem pole, which was noteworthy for being the largest in Canada. An accomplished artisan, Anthany tragically died in 1999 following injuries he sustained in police custody. This mask is a rare example of the young artist's talent.
