Description
A fine and rare Northern Baroque carved altar table with tabernacle, Norway 17th century, fully carved out of native wood with biblical scenes depicting the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. Each panel with title in archaic Norwegian, Christi Karstestels (Christs crucifixion), Christi Tagis Ned of Karsit (Christ taken down from the cross), Christi Begrafvelse (Christ is buried), and Christi Opstandels (The resurrection of Christ). The panels are flanked with figural reserves depicting Nordic saints, surmounted by the upper frieze having two drawers centered with musicians playing stringed instruments, and the highly carved tabernacle decorated with later tufted silk. The sacred altar stone imbedded in the later top has been removed prior to consignment, 19th century conservation was undertaken mainly to drawer boxes and supports to interior. 75"h x 73"w x 32"d Provenance: Property from the collection of Santa Sabina Center, San Rafael, and the Sisters of St. Dominic. Altar was part of the historic Babcock residence purchased by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael in 1920 as a residence hall for the newly established Dominican College. It was then used in the side chapel of the Novitiate in 1939, where it remained until consignment.
