Description
Seven American Folk Art wax head dolls by Mary McEwen (1866-- ?), each with a rich brown complexion and cloth-covered wire-framed body; likely originally with hand sewn garments (now missing), greatest 17"h. Provenance: The Estate of Eddi Van Auken, Danville, California, acquired from Ames Gallery, Berkeley, California. Note: Mary McEwen was an American artist known for creating distinctive wax folk art dolls, particularly during the 1920s and 1930s after moving to Seattle. Her husband owned the McEwen Wax Works in Milwaukee, where she learned to work with wax creating mannequins. After his death, she began crafting miniature wax people.
